Prepare Your Ministry for Another Active Hurricane Season

The Atlantic hurricane season officially started June 1, and weather experts say this season is likely to produce above-normal activity. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center expects 13 to 20 named storms will develop during this hurricane season, with about three to five becoming major hurricanes. Tropical Storms Ana and Bill have already made their way to the Atlantic, and Claudette is expected to form next.

Hurricanes and other tropical storms can be devastating to ministries. High winds can send debris flying through windows and can bring intense flooding, even to inland areas. Take action to prepare your ministry to withstand a hurricane now, so you’re not scrambling when a watch or warning is posted.

To get your ministry ready for hurricane season, consider the following actions:

  • Develop an Emergency Plan – When a storm approaches, following your developed emergency plan will help you respond in an organized, efficient way. As you create an emergency response plan, think about filling your church vehicle’s fuel tank in case of an evacuation and listening to your local authorities for storm updates.
  • Assemble an Emergency Supply Kit – In case of a power outage, or if the community’s water and food supply is contaminated with floodwater, equip your ministry with emergency supplies. Some items to consider including in your emergency supply kit include non-perishable foods, water stored in a clean, plastic container, flashlights, and warm bedding.
  • Prepare Your Building – Looking into repairs and upgrades can prevent or reduce damage to your building in the event of a disaster. There are several things you can do around your facility to avoid damage such as replacing gravel or rock landscaping with shredded bark, anchoring your building’s roof to the walls using hurricane straps, and trimming trees and shrubbery.

Shepherding Ministries in a Time of Change

Anyone who turns on the news, flips through a magazine, or browses the web can see that American society and culture are experiencing rapid transitions. Some ministries have valid concerns that issues surrounding societal shifts may expose them to negative publicity, governmental scrutiny, or litigation.

The questions become: when and how can ministries operate within their deeply held religious beliefs when they may conflict with others’ rights?
